Question:

Assalamu‘alaikum SS Datuk Mufti. What is the meaning of the hadith “With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it,”?

Answer:

Waalaikumussalam wbt,

Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.

Imam al-Munawi said: “Anyone who is fasting, I (Allah SWT) will greatly reward them. I Myslef will be responsible regarding the rewards of fasting without the intermediary of angels or other creations, for fasting is a secret between Me and My slaves. Thus, abstaining oneself from his desires (nafs) will be directly rewarded by Allah SWT.” (See Faidh al-Qadir, 4/250)

The reason is, only with firm belief, people will be able to complete the fasting. Consequently, those who are uncertain in their beliefs will be difficult for them to complete the worship of fasting.
