Question:
Is hajj obligatory for a woman who performs the hajj alone?
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his wives, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.
Generally, it is obligatory for a woman to perform hajj if she is able to do so. This is in accordance with the statement of Allah SWT:
وَلِلَّـهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way.
Surah ‘Ali Imran (97)
However, if there are obstacles that made a person unable to perform hajj, then the obligation is abrogated upon him.
According to the above question, it is not obligated for the woman to perform hajj for it is a condition for her to go and perform hajj together with her husband, mahram or at least two tsiqah (trustworthy) women. However, it is permissible for her to travel and perform hajj together with a tsiqah woman or even alone if she is certain of her safety.
From Abu Hurairah RA, the Prophet PBUH said:
لاَ يَحِلُّ لاِمْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ أَنْ تُسَافِرَ مَسِيرَةَ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ لَيْسَ مَعَهَا حُرْمَةٌ
“It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for one day and night except with a Mahram.”
Sahih al-Bukhari (1088)
Conclusion
Lastly, let us pray so that we are protected by Allah SWT from anything that He dislikes and we always live in His love and blessings. Amin.
